Important to Know
Weather
In Ethiopia, it is possible to visit and travel at any time of the year. The summer months, from the beginning of September to the beginning of June, are the most recommended.
During the summer days, there may be rain, but it is not frequent. The average temperature during these months is about 22 degrees Celsius.
WiFi Communication
You can purchase a local SIM card for internet browsing and local calls. International calls can also be made, but the cost is high, or you can purchase a call package in advance from an Israeli cellular company.
Most hotels offer WiFi.
Trip Difficulty
The trip in the south is rated as low difficulty and is suitable for everyone. The trip in northern Ethiopia is defined as extreme, so a high physical ability is required, as there will be many walks.
Travel Insurance
Upon registration for the trip, it is mandatory for travelers to obtain travel insurance for abroad at their own expense, which includes an extended COVID-19 clause.
Additionally, the travel insurance policy should include all coverages and extensions offered by insurance companies, including adventure sports, boating, off-road driving, and walking in unpaved areas, among others, according to all the activities in the trip itinerary.
Clothing and Equipment:
You should pack comfortable clothing, warm attire for the evening, a raincoat, rain pants, and a hat. Comfortable walking shoes are also essential.
Vaccinations Before Traveling:
It is advisable to consult a travel clinic or health fund regarding necessary vaccinations. It is recommended to get all required vaccinations, as the travel period is quite long. We will be traveling from southern Ethiopia to the northern region, specifically Lalibela.
Water:
Drink only mineral water from sealed bottles or alternatively, water that has been boiled. Do not drink from flowing sources (sealed water bottles will be provided to travelers during the entire trip).
Electrical Outlets:
In Ethiopia, most electrical outlets are similar to those in Israel: 2 pins. Alternatively, there are Chinese sockets. If you need an electrical product with a 3-pin plug, please bring a universal adapter.
Currency:
The official currency of Ethiopia is the Birr (ETB). 1 US dollar is approximately equal to 120 Birr. We recommend bringing cash – US dollars – and exchanging for local currency upon arrival in Addis Ababa. Credit cards are not accepted everywhere.
Local Time:
The time in Ethiopia is the same as Israel's summer time. The Ethiopian time system consists of 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night.
